The Regional Museum Maria Accascina was founded in 1806 as Museo Civico, representing today a treasure chest of testimonies of the rich and glorious history of the third largest city in Sicily. Its collections include thematic areas from the Greek-Roman collection, medieval artworks, Renaissance and Baroque sculptures and paintings, up to items produced in contemporary times.
Among them, you can appreciate: the precious paintings by Caravaggio, The Rising of Lazaro and The Adoration of the Shepherds, produced by the famous Italian painter during his stay in Messina between 1608 and 1609, and the wooden Polyptych by Antonello da Messina, dating back to 1473
